Fire officers take charge amid fanfare

Company officers were sworn in at the Valley Stream Fire Department’s installation dinner last Friday night at Russo’s on the Bay in Howard Beach.

The Valley Stream Fire Department hosted its 116th annual installation dinner on May 2 at Russo's on the Bay in Howard Beach.
Charles Brocher was installed at the department's 95th chief, after serving four years as an assistant chief. James Ervolino moved up to first assistant chief, and Jason Croak was sworn in as second assistant chief.
All company officers were also sworn in, and former Chief Brian Howley was installed as the department's delegate to the Third Battalion, which includes Valley Stream and fire departments from the Five Towns.
Outgoing Chief John Beck Jr. installed Walter Schroeder, a member of Engine Company No. 2, as an honorary chief. Kathy Goodwin, the president of the Ladies Auxiliary, was also recognized.
