A man is in serious condition after an 86-year-old male crashed his car into a Dunkin Donuts located at 120 E. Sunrise Highway at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, police said. Five people sustained injuries during the accident, including the driver and his 85-year-old passenger, police said.

The male patron, 45, was pinned inside the store, police said, after the vehicle shattered the storefront glass. According to Joseph C. Sperber, chief of the Lawrence-Cedarhurst Fire Department, police and Valley Stream firefighters used specialized equipment to extricate the man. He was then airlifted to Nassau University Medical Center in East Meadow for treatment via a Nassau County Police Department helicopter. The man sustained internal injuries, police said, and is listed in serious condition.

Two additional patrons, along with the driver and his passenger, suffered minor injuries and were transported to local area hospitals, police said. The four employees who were in the store at the time of the accident were not injured, police said.

Both the eastbound and westbound lanes of Sunrise Highway were closed from Horton Avenue to Rockaway Avenue as police conducted an investigation, Sperber said.

According to police, a breathalyzer test was performed at the scene yielding negative results. Detectives report no apparent criminality at this time. The vehicle, a 1996 Buick, has been impounded for brake and safety checks.
