Fix the pool bathrooms

Posted

To The Editor:

In the March 22-28, issue of the Herald, one article was titled “Valley Stream nixes new pool entrance.”

“What was supposed to be a guaranteed project for the spring has now been scrapped, after bids for a new pool entrance came in well above the projected cost,” it reads. My family and I have been members of the pool for more than 30 years, and it is still a great place to go and cool off in the summer.

What I find deplorable is the men’s changing room, especially the communal shower room. The showers don’t work properly, the water is cold, many shower heads are inoperable, the tiles are dingy and dirty. The bathroom isn’t any better. The sign before exiting the dressing room to the pool states “Please Shower Before Entering The Pool.” I, for one, take my shower before leaving home. With the funds the village saved on this unusual winter, by having almost nothing spent on snow removal, this issue should be addressed prior to the opening of the pool, a little more than a month away. This work can be easily accomplished by using the talent of village workers.

What I read in this article was that the village cares about is mostly aesthetic things, new entrance awnings at $14,000, landscaping, and a new facade at a cost of $35,000. The village has gone ahead with a skateboard park, a dog park, a new electronic message board (too small to even read a complete event) and re-paving the parking lot. I’m sure many residents who utilize the pool complex will agree with me.

Please, if only by temporarily fixing the bathrooms and showers in both the men’s and women’s dressing rooms, do so before the opening of the pool season.
