Girl walking to school robbed in Valley Stream

An 11-year-old girl was robbed in Valley Stream while walking to school on Monday morning.

According to Nassau County Police, the girl was walking in the vicinity of Miller Place and Fritchie Place when she was approached from behind by an unknown man at about 8:40 a.m. The man grabbed the girl's hood, turning her around. He then demanded money.

Police say he attempted to strike the victim with an unknown object, but the girl handed over $2 and fell to to ground to avoid being hit. The man then fled on foot, eastbound on Fritchie Place.

The suspect is described as 6-foot, an average build wearing a dark zippered-down hooded sweatshirt, sweatpants, gloves and a mask. No injuries were reported.

District 30 Superintendent Dr. Elaine Kanas said a student arrived at Shaw Avenue School Monday morning and notified the administration that she was approached by an unknown man who asked for her lunch money. Administrators then called the police.

Kanas said a letter will be sent home to parents.
