Hempstead Town Supervisor Kate Murray and the Town Board honored 15 Nassau County police officers and 10 village police officers at a ceremony on Sept. 20 at the Nathan L.H. Bennett Pavilion at Town Hall in Hempstead.

“From solving murders and extensive undercover work to patrolling our streets, our police honorees have distinguished themselves as local heroes,” Murray said. “The town is proud to have the opportunity to recognize those who serve and protect our residents.”

Among officers recognized for their distinguished service were Anthony Uvena, of the 5th Precinct; Det. Jason Gaertner, of the 5th Squad; and Malverne officers Kenneth Padilla and Thomas Winters.

In a precinct renowned for level of service and heroic performance, Officer Anthony Uvena stands out for his gallant response to a life threatening situation, according to Murray.

In May, Uvena responded to a call in which two armed suspects were fleeing from a scene where they had threatened two people with a loaded weapon. When he reached the scene, Uvena observed the fleeing suspects and pursued the due at a high rate of speed until their car came to a stop. He proceeded to approach the vehicle and detain the suspects without incident or injury, and awaited the arrival of fellow officers, who conducted a search and found a loaded 38-caliber Smith & Wesson revolver, a stun gun and several bags of marijuana.

“Throughout a distinguished career, Officer Uvena has proven himself to be a conscientious, self-motivated and decisive officer,” Murray said. “Uvena is the ultimate professional and an invaluable asset to the county police force. One incident is only a small indication of a remarkable career.”

“Justice is not always swift,” Murray said. “There are times when arduous research and painstaking investigation are required to crack frustrating cases. Fortunately for area residents, Det. Jason Gaertner is a persistent and tenacious crime fighter.”
