It’s back to school for parents, too

Posted

Valley Stream North High School hosted its annual Back to School Night for all parents on Sept. 20. Back to School Night gives the students’ parents an idea of how their child’s school day goes by following their schedule class by class, though all nine periods lasted only 10 minutes each. The teachers explained, step by step, what they will be teaching, how they are organizing their class and their homework policies.

Some teachers gave out worksheets listing necessities for the class or major topics, while others created PowerPoint presentations with fun designs and entertaining, informative short videos.

It is important for parents to meet their children’s teachers to know the class requirements so they can help their children throughout the year. Also, teachers appreciate it when parents attend so they have a connection with the parents and know they are interested in their children’s work at school.

Earlier in the night, the parents were able to sign up for the parent teacher conferences, where they talk about their child’s progress in a certain class one-on-one with the teacher. Parents could choose which teachers they would like to meet with, and the times that best suit their schedule. The parent-teacher conferences will be held in a few weeks.

The students are also invited to attend Back to School Night to help out their parents with getting around the school and signing up for the conferences.

Aside from meeting the teachers and getting to know their children’s schedules, parents were invited to purchase Valley Stream North clothing such as sweatpants, t-shirts and backpacks.

The parents had a great time at Back to School Night because they were put in their children’s shoes and have the high school experience all over again. Overall, throughout the night there was a positive vibe shared between the teachers, parents and students who attended and it was a great way for parents to feel more comfortable knowing what goes on in their children’s lives at school.
