Campers and counselors described the event as one of the highlights of the year.

“It’s definitely the most fun day of the summer,” said counselor Adrian Laudani. “It’s something that everyone looks forward to, both kids and counselors.”

The event is the culmination of plenty of hard work, according to camp director Nicole Winter. Each counselor is asked to design a booth as part of the festivities, complete with a game for campers to play. Older campers get in on the action too, helping to design and build booths.

Counselor Spencer Carrion said that the event brings the staff together at the end of the summer.

“Since we all have to design our own booths, it builds a really great, friendly spirit of competition. We all compete with each other to see who can have the most popular booth, the best games, the best music,” he said.

Campers are treated to about a dozen booths, including a bounce house, face painting, an obstacle course and a host of other games. Two of the most popular events of the day with campers were the dunk tank, which allowed kids a chance to sink their counselors, and the exotic animal tent, featuring tortoises, snakes, lizards, rabbits and other animals.

“My favorite is either the dunk tank or the obstacle course,” said Isabella Secaira-Cott, a camper, after submerging her counselor Alex Valenti into the cold water. For his part, Valenti was in good spirits in spite of the “chilly” water he repeatedly found himself in.

“Just like everyone else, this is my favorite day at the camp. Its impossible not to have fun, everyone really gets to enjoy it,” he said.

Kids and counselors weren’t the only ones in on the fun. Parents were welcome to attend and walked from station to station with their children. Allyson MacDonald visited the camp with her daughter, Faith.

“It’s a great day. It’s always fun to see the kids and be able to do something like this with them, especially at camp,” MacDonald said.

Carnival Day serves as a symbolic end to the summer at Camp Barrett. It is the last major event of the season, and the camp concludes this year on Friday, Aug. 15. Camper Kristin Cirillo was glad to have the time to celebrate her summer experience there.

“I loved spending time with my group, and spending time with my best friends,” she said.
