Longtime Valley Stream resident George Malekian died on Aug. 8 after a brief illness. He was 93.

Malekian was born on Aug. 27, 1921 in Detroit, Mich. He served in World War II and attended Susquehanna University and Columbia University after the war, then went on to own an office machine business in Astoria, Queens, before becoming a sales manager at the Royal Typewriter division of Litton Industries.

Malekian was a founding member of the Valley Stream Elks, and served as an exalted ruler and a New York state president in the organization. He served on many community boards, including the Zoning Board and the Advisory Committee of NEFCU.

Malekian was an icon in Valley Stream, living in the village for more than 67 years, and was as much the fabric of the town as some of its structures, according to a family member. He left his family and friends with warm and precious memories of his ever-present wit, fascinating stories and abundant warmth and charm. He will be dearly missed and always remembered by those who loved him, his family said.

He was pre-deceased by his wife of 55 years, Anna. He is survived by two sons: Richard, his wife, Phyllis, and their son, Geoffrey; and Stephen, his former wife, Holly, and their children, Claire, Margaux, and Spencer; and his dear friend Debby Nagler. His wake was held at The Moore Funeral Home in Valley Stream on Wednesday and continues Thursday from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the charitable organization of your choice.
