Exploring Nature

Owl Prowl
When it’s dark outside, who knows what’s lurking in the neighborhood? Get up close and personal with some mysterious creatures of the night, courtesy of Theodore Roosevelt Sanctuary and Audubon Center. Owls, the stealth, silent hunters of the night, have become an integral part of myths, legends and popular entertainment. They are mostly portrayed as creepy haunters of old buildings and cemeteries, or evil denizens of the dark. Discover what fascinating creatures they actually are at a live owl presentation. Then venture outside to hear calls of Great Horned and Eastern Screech Owls.
Friday, Nov. 26, 7-9 p.m. Registration required. $10. Location to be announced. Theodore Roosevelt Sanctuary and Audubon Center, 134 Cove Rd., Oyster Bay. (516) 922-3200.

Holiday Outing

Turkeys, Pies And Other Good Things...
If you missed it last weekend, there’s still time to experience a traditional Thanksgiving as it was celebrated in the 19th century, during Old Bethpage Village Restoration’s annual Thanksgiving event. Old-fashioned wood burning stoves, beehive ovens and hearths are fired up to prepare a variety of foods and baked goods, using historical recipes. A fat turkey is spitted and roasted, with a demonstration of food preservation methods, musical entertainment, and children’s activities.
Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 27-28, 10 a.m.-3:30 p.m. $10 adults; $7 children 4-14 and seniors. 1303 Round Swamp Road, Old Bethpage. (516) 572-8400.
