Power slowly being restored in Valley Stream

A majority of homes and business in Valley Stream remain without power on Saturday afternoon in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, which knocked down trees, power lines and utility poles throughout the community.

According to the Long Island Power Authority, more than 11,000 customers remained without power in the village, out of about 13,500. In North Valley Stream, 1,100 customers had no power, and another 1,200 customers were without lights in South Valley Stream.

Crews assigned to the North Valley Stream area were able to restore power to 1,500 homes there on Friday. Another 500 homes in the village were also back on.

With most of the power out, there are few traffic lights working in the village. Lights are out along Rockaway Avenue, Merrick Road and Sunrise Highway.

LIPA has indicated that the majority of customers will get their power back by the the weekend of Nov. 10-11. Islandwide, about 600,000 customers have already been restored since the height of the storm.
