Thankful for honors for late mayor

To the Editor:

As the first anniversary of my husband’s passing nears, I find great comfort in the incredible kindness and generosity of spirit that is extended to me again and again in memory of Eddie. I thank the Valley Stream community and its literally thousands of residents who continue to lift my spirits by sharing their personal memories of Eddie. I am deeply touched by each and every effort made by friends, neighbors and heretofore strangers to tell me about the positive difference he made in their lives.

Most recently, at a Flag Day ceremony at the Hendrickson Park gazebo, dear friend Joe Scalese and his late wife, Eileen, were instrumental in arranging for the dedication of an American flag flown over the U.S. Capitol in Eddie’s memory. My appreciation to the Scalese family, and beautiful words of Deacon Clyde Ruggiero in making the presentation to me, Mayor Ed Fare and the Village of Valley Stream.

Similarly, the Valley Stream Boy Scout Camporee Committee honored me in Eddie’s memory during their 31st annual camporee on the Village Green. As a former Boy Scout himself, Eddie especially enjoyed spending time with the scouts and their families. I sincerely thank Camporee Chairperson Michael Williams, Secretary Terry Eaton and all of the scouts for honoring Eddie’s memory in a fond tribute.

Finally, I would like to invite the community and Eddie’s many friends to join me on the anniversary of his passing on July 31 when the Valley Stream Chamber of Commerce will dedicate a plaque at Village Hall. Thank you to Chamber President Debbi Gyulay, along with her advisory committee, Jim Darcy, Joanne Antun and Jules Rabin, who have selflessly worked to make this event a reality.

Please join me, along with cherished friends Jim and Stephanie Darcy, Maureen and Craig Weeden, and Rabbi and Mrs. Yitzhak Goldshmid, at the 1:30 p.m. dedication on Sunday, July 31. This day will be especially meaningful, as Eddie’s memory will be enshrined at Village Hall, a place he held in the highest regard and from where he endeavored to serve the village with purpose and humility.
