As of midnight on election night, tens of thousands of absentee ballots remained to be counted, making projecting winners in any number of races for Congress and the State Legislature tricky, if not impossible. Check back with the Herald Wednesday morning for updated results.
Here’s what we knew as of midnight Wednesday:
Right around midnight, Andrew Garbarino, a Republican, was projected to win the 2nd Congressional District seat, defeating Democrat Jackie Gordon. The two battled in one of Long Island’s higher-profile races, this one to replace outgoing Republican Rep. Peter King, a national figure.
Nassau County Democratic Party Chairman Jay Jacobs had declared three Democrats — State Sen. John Brooks, of Seaford, State Sen. Todd Kaminsky, of Long Beach, and Sen. Anna Kaplan, of Great Neck — as winners. The announcement came just before midnight on News 12. Brooks ran unopposed.
Kaminsky said, “It’s really gratifying to have the voters of the South Shore send me back” to Albany, noting that only a few years ago, none of Long Island’s senators were Democrats.
In the State Assembly, it appeared Michaelle Solages, in the 22nd District, would coast to victory, with more than 60 percent of the vote and 71 percent of election districts reporting.
"I want to express my heartfelt appreciation to the voters of the 22nd Assembly District,” Solages said. “I am honored and humbled by your support. Due to your encouragement and unwavering commitment, we were successful. I will continue to work tirelessly on your behalf to help address the challenges we face, as well as secure lasting and meaningful improvements to our community."
Here were other vote totals in districts within the Heralds’ coverage area. These tallies were as of 1 a.m. and were unofficial. Check back Wednesday morning for updated totals. All results are from the New York State Board of Elections.
