Valley Stream Central High School District swears in its new board trustees

The Valley Stream Central High School District Board of Education held its annual reorganization meeting on July 11, during which the board president and vice president were sworn in for the 2023-2024 school year as well as the new and returning trustees.

The nine-person body comprises trustees selected to serve on the high school district board by the Valley Stream District 13, District 24, and District 30 boards of education. Milagros Vicente, from District 13, was nominated as President for the 2023-2024 year and Melissa Herrera, from District 24, was nominated as Vice President of the board. The new trustee on the high school board this year is James Lavery, from District 30. Returning trustees from the previous year include District 24’s Armando Hernandez and John Maier, District 13’s Patricia Farrell and Gerardo Cavaliere, and District 30’s C. Sandra Okafor and Kelly Ureña. Mary Colgan was also sworn in as the returning district clerk.

“I want to thank my fellow Trustees for placing their trust in me,” President Vicente said. “It is a privilege to have the opportunity to serve as President of The Valley Stream Central High School District Board of Education. We all share the vision of academic success, educational excellence, and supporting our students’ welfare and well-being. I look forward to helping shepherd additional programs and opportunities for all our students alongside the administration, teachers, and this board.”

“I am honored to have been nominated to serve as Vice President for the upcoming school year,” said Vice President Herrera. “I look forward to working alongside my fellow Trustees in supporting and helping grow the District’s vision. With student progress always being the goal in mind, I am excited to continue to collaborate and assist in maintaining the District’s standards for educational excellence while enriching all avenues of learning.”
