DISTRICT 13

Proposed budget: $44,659,348
Change: +$1,441,643 (+3.3 percent)
Tax levy: $33,236,190
Change: +$1,243,305 (+3.89 percent)
Tax cap allowable increase: 3.89 percent

Tax impact: The average homeowner would see their elementary school tax bill rise by $92.17 for the year. According to school officials, this is an increase of 25 cents per day.

Budget highlights: The proposed budget maintains all programs in the district, including music, art, after-school programs and summer recreation, and it keeps class sizes at or near current levels. It provides funds for the purchase of some additional security equipment.

Revenue: The district is slated to receive about $9 million in state aid next year. That is an increase of about $220,000 over the current school year. District 13 will also be using $1,875,000 from its reserves.

Contingency budget: If the budget were to fail twice, the district would have to cut about $1.2 million from its proposed spending plan. Possible cuts could include the elimination of the summer recreation program, instrumental music, field trips and extra-curricular activities. Class sizes could increase and capital projects would be put on hold. Community use of buildings and grounds would be restricted.

Voting information: Polls are open from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. at the
James A. Dever, Howell Road, Wheeler Avenue and Willow Road schools.
