Valley Stream Fire Department a great asset

To the Editor: 

I read with much gratitude the caption below the photo marking the transition in leadership of the Valley Stream Fire Department from Chief Antonio Nuzzi to Chief Joe Fernandez (April 22-28). Holy Name of Mary has benefited greatly from the generous volunteer spirit and extraordinary professionalism of the VSFD. Back in 2001, and again this past March, members of the department came to emergency situations in our school building and prevented major disasters. On both occasions, we did not lose a day of school.

Along with all members of our local community, I join with you in thanking Chief Nuzzi and supporting Chief Fernandez.  Many of our VSFD firefighters I know through their participation at Holy Name of Mary. They have many additional responsibilities as parents and spouses and give of themselves in lots of other community activities. I am also very grateful to the families of our volunteer firefighters who support their family members in this essential volunteer activity.

Chief Nuzzi, thanks for your support and leadership. Chief Fernandez, be assured of our support for you and all who serve with you.
