Valley Stream Girl Scouts gets pampered

The Valley Stream Association of Girl Scouts held a new event this year — a spa day for more than 100 girls. The Caring and Keeping of Me spa party was held on Nov. 20 at Memorial Junior High School.

During the three-hour event, girls could get a facial and a maincure, learn hair-braiding, and make their own lip gloss, bracelet and bath soap. Mary Kay Cosmetics representative Lucy Mensah taught skin care techniques and gave makeovers. There was also a representative from Lia Sophia jewelry, Valerie Segnious.

Joan Ford, the Girl Scout Association’s events coordinator, said about 125 girls attended, representing many of Valley Stream’s 40 Girl Scout troops. Each girl got to take home a gift bag which included a picture of themselves at the event and a feather boa.

Ford said that the scouts are always helping others through various community service activities, so it was time to do something for them. “This day was just for the girls to be girly,” she said, adding that the idea for the event came from Girl Scout Cadette Brittany James.

Students in the Central High School District’s cosmetology program volunteered their time helping decorate, clean up and work the various stations.

There was cake and cupcakes baked by troop leaders, and numerous raffles. Money raised will be used to support Valley Stream Girls Scouts working to earn their Gold Awards.

Ford said the spa party was a huge success. “It was a lot of fun,” she said. “We’d definitely like to have it again.”
