Eighteen children from the Valley Stream area put their basketball skills to the test last Saturday morning, participating in the Knights of Columbus annual free-throw contest. The event, for boys and girls ages 10-14, was sponsored by the Father Thomas Carroll Council and organized by Jack Wagner.

The local competition was held in the Holy Name of Mary School gymnasium. Each child had 15 shots to make as many baskets as possible.

By far, the toughest competition was in the 12-year-old divisions. In the boys group, there were six shooters vying for the title. And out of six total girls who participated in the event, four competed as 12-year-olds.

The winner from each age group will be invited back for the district level championship at Holy Name School on Feb. 25 to compete against winners from other area Knights of Columbus chapters. The second-round champions then move on to compete at the state level.
