Hudes hits the town

Whether it’s an illegal apartment, a drug-ridden area or just a small pothole on a side street, residents of the Town of Hempstead want these problems to be addressed. Although elected officials would love to solve issues right away, sometimes there just isn’t enough time in the day.

Hempstead Town Councilman Gary Hudes, of Levittown, found a solution to help with specific concerns in the 6th district, which includes Levittown and portions of Wantagh, Seaford, East Meadow, Bellmore, Bethpage and Merrick. “Gary on the Go,” a government mobile service, was set up on May 10 outside the Cherrywood Shopping Center on Wantagh Avenue to address any community concerns.

“Long before I held office, more than 15 years ago, I was a community activist, working on many projects throughout the town to improve the residential and business community,” Hudes said. “I always found it beneficial to sit down and meet with people individually and to have meaningful discussions on community issues.

“When I took office, I found that large, public community meetings just became agendas for politically motivated individuals,” Hudes added. “The things that really mattered to people with real problems never got addressed. I decided then that ‘Gary on the Go’ and meeting one-on-one with residents, was the way to go.”

Twice a year, he sets up the mobile office in various parts of the council district to meet with residents. “Gary on the Go” was created to bring local government to the people.

“Where can a resident anywhere, sit down with their elected representative, face-to-face, without an appointment, and discuss community issues or a personal problem associated with their home or business?” Hudes asked. “Where can they sit down one-on-one and face-to-face with the person that has been elected to represent them? ‘Gary on the Go’ is the ultimate personal government customer service forum.
