Candle ceremony honors 9/11 victims

Twenty-two years later, communities continue to pay their respects for those who died on 9/11.

On Sept. 11, the Seaford 9/11 committee hosted their annual memorial candle lighting ceremony at the commemorative plaza at Seaford High School. Members of nearby communities came together to honor the memory of those who died on Sept. 11, 2001.

Among those who died that day were five Seaford alumni, which the plaza is dedicated to. These men were Thomas and Timothy Haskell, Robert Sliwak, John William Perry and Michael Wittenstein.

Representatives from the Seaford, Wantagh, and Freeport fire departments were present, along with the Nassau Police Department and other first responders.

A bell toll honored the memory of those who died on 9/11, along with members of the armed forces and Covid victims. The bell toll also thanked the Seaford community for its support and prayers for the past 22 years.

The Seaford High School band played the national anthem, while the Nassau County Police pipe and drum band also performed.

The candle ceremony was a touching memorial for the 9/11 victims, and is a reminder that Seaford, Wantagh, and other communities, will always remember the lives lost on that tragic day.
