‘The Godfather’ Live
Francis Ford Coppola’s masterpiece returns to the big screen in a special concert event, accompanied the Long Island Concert Orchestra in its debut performance. The Oscar-winning 1972 classic takes on a new appeal, as Nina Rota’s iconic score becomes a focal point when performed live. Rota’s soundtrack, along with the film’s traditional Italian folk music and jazz, comes to life anew in this blend of film and concert. There is little film music as instantly recognizable as the opening trumpet sounds that set the tone for what is to come. For the Long Island Concert Orchestra, the new collaboration between between David Winkler, director of Chamber Players International, and former Long Island Music Director David Stuart Wiley and his fellow musicians, this is an important step in the young orchestra’s development.

Family Fun

‘Journey to Oz’
Inspired by L. Frank Baum’s original stories, this clever adaptation by the Experiential Theater Company puts the audience front and center. In this lively interactive production, audience members become part of the cast — singing, dancing and acting alongside professional actors. Kids learn the art of storytelling while creating, analyzing and participating in the performance. They may be invited to go to Oz with Dorothy or be Dorothy. When the cyclone comes, the entire theater enters the eye of the storm with whisking lights and stirring music created by lauded composer Josh Totora. Children meet and help the scarecrow, the tin woodman, the citizens of the Emerald City and help the Witch of the West with her makeup, all the while finding out why there’s no place like home.
Friday, May 19, 10:15 a.m. and noon; Saturday May 20, 11:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. $9 with museum admission ($7 members), $12 theater only. Long Island Children’s Museum, Museum Row, Garden City. (516) 224-5800 or www.licm.org.

Exploring History

Colonial Day
Step back in time and visit Colonial America at Rock Hall Museum’s Colonial Day, a celebration of 250 years of history. The family-friendly event features re-enactors who bring the 18th century to life with Colonial-era music, games and activities in the garden. Visitors will obtain a special perspective on local history. Considered to be one of the finest pre-Revolutionary War homes on Long Island, Rock Hall was built in 1767 for Josiah Martin, a wealthy West Indian plantation owner. The Georgian style home belonged to two of the area’s most famous families, the Martins and the Hewletts. It was deeded to the Town of Hempstead in 1948 and, after extensive renovation, opened as a museum in 1953.
Sunday, May 21, noon-4 p.m. Rock Hall Museum, 199 Broadway, Lawrence. (516) 239-1157.
