Wantagh Library budget to maintain programs

Posted

Patrons of the Wantagh Public Library will head to the polls on April 19 to vote on a $2.49 million budget that would maintain all programs and services.

The library Board of Trustees unanimously adopted the 2016-17 spending plan on March 21. It raises spending .64 percent, or $16,672. The tax levy would rise .68 percent, which is slightly below the library district’s tax cap.

Maggie Marino, director of the library, said that it is a straightforward budget that includes no cuts or additions. She said the spending plan will ensure a wide variety of programs for patrons of all ages.

In the last year, Marino said that Wantagh has become a Family Place Library offering more programs, services and resources to families. Overall use of the library has increased as well, she said.

Nearly half of the budget accounts for salaries, which collectively will rise by less than 1 percent.

Also on the ballot will be the election for one seat on the library board. Trustee Gianna Gelci-Steen is running unopposed for a five-year term.

The budget hearing will be held on Monday, April 11 at 7 p.m. in the community room, with voter registration taking place the following day from 4 to 8 p.m. Voting takes place on Tuesday, April 19 from 1 to 9 p.m. The Wantagh Library District boundaries are the same as the Wantagh School District.
