10 questions with WHHS principal Alvaro Escobar

Posted

The Herald grabbed some time with Alvaro Escobar, West Hempstead High School's new principal, to learn more about his background, his aspirations for WHHS, and the great changes he's already seen happen in the high school over the past 15 years.

Q: Do you live in the community?

I live in Queens, in Whitestone. I’m married with two boys, one is in college and one is a high school sophomore.

Q: You’ve been with the school district for 15 years. What were your responsibilities during that time?

I was athletic director for six years and the rest I was assistant principal. I was in charge of health, physical education and athletics. The program has evolved, however, in terms of teaching more life activities — things the students can do long after they leave high school like tennis and fitness type programs like cross training activities. We’ve kept up with the times. Our athletics offerings have grown.
