Positive growth in the village

To the Editor:

East Rockaway is continuing its renaissance by transforming itself into a hot community by the bay — one that’s attracting new residents and businesses that bolster our tax base, while bringing wonderful new families and seniors into our neighborhoods.

However, it is truly disappointing that one resident has taken it upon himself to not only downplay these positive steps forward in our community, but also to resurrect a long-defeated plan to build New York City-type apartment buildings at the Davison’s Boatyard property (“Revitalizing our downtowns” June 2-8).
That type of urban sprawl has no place in our village, as opposed to Marina Pointe, a new residential development scheduled to be completed next year — an idea that upholds the character of our bedroom community by fostering ownership, not transient rentals.
Dan Caracciolo unfortunately, and blatantly, ignores the positive growth we’ve been able to usher into the village. I don’t know why anyone would disregard the soon-to-open Best Market, one of the region’s top supermarkets, and its multimillion dollar upgrade of the old Pathmark location on Atlantic Avenue.  Althouse 1848, a gastropub on the waterfront, is also reopening and will continue to attract diners from across the South Shore. The Lazy Lobster, a new seafood eatery opening at our waterfront, will attract patrons seeking to enjoy the views of our waterways with their family and friends, while the recently opened Po’ Boys Sandwich Shop brings the tastes of the Bayou and New Orleans right to our Main Street backyard. A new Greek restaurant on the site of the old Jeanie’s Bakery will soon be opening as well.
Village Hall has helped big things happen in East Rockaway’s downtown. It’s unfortunate that the regular group of naysayers continue to ignore this fact.

Frolic was a success

To the Editor:
On behalf of the East Rockaway Grist Mill Museum Committee, I wish to express our gratitude to all of our community organizations, vendors, entertainers, the Nassau County Police 4th Precinct, the East Rockaway Auxiliary Police and Fire Department and Department of Public Works, as well as all of the residents of our community who participated in the 47th Annual Huckleberry Frolic in Memorial Park last Saturday.
I would also like to thank the members of the Grist Mill Museum Committee for their dedication and hard work in planning and staging the Frolic. As always, it is the interest, time and support of dedicated people that make our annual event an enjoyable journey into the past through the gateway of the Grist Mill Museum, as well as a financially successful fundraising event supporting our museum.

Congrats to the Rocks

Kudos to East Rockaway High School on two Island-wide achievements over the past few weeks.
The Lady Rocks softball team easily glided to a 21-4 victory over Pierson/Bridgehampton to earn the Long Island Class C softball championship, their first Island-wide crown since 2007. Their tremendous play on the field, especially batting in 17 runs over two innings, led the team to victory.
The Rock’s baseball Class C championship is also well earned, especially with pitcher Ryan Kelly giving up only one hit for a 3-0 victory over Southold. That, too, was a tremendous accomplishment.
Both teams’ wins are a credit the fine education the players have received at East Rockaway Schools, and speak volumes about not only the players’ athleticism but also their continued dedication to improving themselves and perfecting their playing skills.
The teams’ great performances on the field, and in the classroom, are worthy of the highest praise and admiration; they truly are scholar-athletes with tremendous family and parental support.
Kudos on capturing the crowns and making East Rockaway proud!
