Scholarships awarded in West Hempstead

On May 24, over 60 community leaders and friends of the West Hempstead Community Scholarship Fund gathered at the Pompeii Restaurant to celebrate this year’s winners of the Fund’s scholarships:

  • Matthew Walz, West Hempstead HS. Walz will attend SUNY Binghamton
  • Gary Mejia-Perez, West Hempstead High School. Mejia-Perez will attend Molloy College
  • Kelly Valero, West Hempstead High School. Valero will attend Elon University
  • Tamar Fuchs, West Hempstead High School. Fuchs will attend Hawaii Pacific University
  • Matthew Rosenberg, Hebrew Academy of Nassau County. Rosenberg will attend Columbia University

Each awardee received $2,000.

The event included musical entertainment by members of the West Hempstead High School’s orchestra, and guests enjoyed raffle drawings, presentations about the history and goals of the Fund and acceptance speeches by the winners. 

For 47 years, the Fund has awarded scholarships on the basis of merit and need to West Hempstead and Island Park students who attend West Hempstead High School. Since its inception, the fund has awarded $379,120 to 274 students.
