At around 9:49 p.m., according to detectives, Michael Guglielmi, 59, of West Hempstead, was driving eastbound on Stewart Avenue in a 1998 Volvo when he tried crossing into a westbound lane and struck a tree near Kildare Road. Before the collision, police said, Guglielmi was texting on his cell phone while driving.

Guglielmi was soon transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 10:23 p.m., according to reports.

While Guglielmi’s vehicle has been impounded for brake and safety checks, detectives said that the investigation is ongoing.
