Nature at Night
Discover that wandering in the woods in the dark doesn’t have to be scary during a special program at Theodore Roosevelt Sanctuary and Audubon Center. All ages are invited to have an up-close encounter with some nighttime creatures, where you will learn how to use all of your senses and search the Sanctuary for signs of animals that use the cover of darkness to hunt for prey or hide from predators. The evening includes a sing-along and marshmallow roast around the campfire.

Barrier Beach Blues Festival

Sounds of the blues can be heard throughout Long Beach in the form of this weekend’s 3rd Annual Barrier Beach Blues and Arts Festival. Inspired by producer Johanna Mathieson-Ellmer, with the assistance of Artists in Partnership and the Long Beach Public Library, the festival brings local and nationally recognized masters of the blues to perform at varied venues in Long Beach.The focus is on Memphis Blues, performed by such renowned musicians as Toby Walker, rising “Roots” musician and vocalist Valerie June, Kerry Kearney and his Louisiana Jamboree, Chrissie O’Dell and One Hot Mess, MOTU, Bennett Harris, and Mike Barnett, along with other featured acts.Now through Sunday, July 3. These glorious summer days are tailor-made for kite flying. Join Long Island Children’s Museum staff for an afternoon devoted to kites, Discover how kites were first used on secret rescue missions in China in 549 AD and have evolved since then into many different shapes, sizes, and types. Learn how to construct your own wind dancers and put your kite-making skills to the test in the museum’s Our Backyard as you watch them float in the air.
