College scholarship applications now available in West Hemsptead

Posted

College-bound students from the communities of West Hempstead and Island Park have an opportunity to ease their financial burden by winning a scholarship from their community.  For more than 40 years, the West Hempstead Community Scholarship Fund, a group of public-spirited residents who seek to promote the education of high school students in West Hempstead and Island Park, have raised funds through the cooperation and generosity of members, neighbors and local businesses and service groups.

The Fund plans to award at least three scholarships of $2,000 each this year. To be eligible for consideration, a graduating student must reside in the West Hempstead Union Free School District and can attend any high school, public or private. Island Park residents are eligible only if they attend West Hempstead High School. The scholarships are based on an evaluation of character, potential, community service and financial need.

Applications are currently available in the West Hempstead High School guidance office and at the West Hempstead Public Library. They have also been distributed to locations in Island Park and to many private schools. The deadline is March 25. Applications are reviewed by the Fund’s Selection Committee and semi-finalists are selected. Semi-finalists are then interviewed by the Selection Committee at the end of April and scholarships will be awarded at the Fund’s annual dinner on June 5.

If you are looking for ways to supplement that big tuition bill, pick up an application. If you have questions, contact the Selection Committee Chairman Karen Crowley at the West Hempstead Community Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 2132, West Hempstead, N.Y., 11552 or by phone at (516) 385-2206.
