People named in Crime Watch items as having been arrested and charged with violations or crimes are only suspected of committing those acts of which they are accused. They are all presumed to be innocent of those charges until and unless found guilty in a court of law.

W.H. resident killed in hit and run

First Precinct homicide detectives are still investigating a fatal hit and run accident that occurred at Eisenhower Park in East Meadow on Sept. 16. The accident killed West Hempstead resident Leonidas DeJesus Portillo.

According to detectives, sometime prior to 9:15 p.m. last Wednesday, a driver traveling on Park Boulevard inside the park saw Portillo's body lying partially in the roadway and he called the police. Portillo, 24, was then transported to Nassau University Medical Center in East Meadow, where he was pronounced dead. After a brief investigation, police were able to determine Portillo's identity and residence.

Police urge anyone with information regarding the accident to call Crime Stoppers at 1-(800)-244-TIPS. All callers will remain anonymous.

Man robbed at gunpoint at Capri Motor Inn

Police are actively searching for two men who robbed a man inside the Capri Motor Inn in West Hempstead on Sept. 17.

According to 5th Precinct police, the 24-year-old victim said that while he was inside the hotel, two men approached him armed with guns and then stole his cash, $2,500 necklace and $300 cell phone. There were no injuries, police said.

The suspects are described as black men who appeared to be about 6 feet tall and who were wearing T-shirts, jeans and baseball caps during the incident.

Arrest

West Hempstead- Police arrested three males on Sept. 19 at 12:40 a.m. for breaking into cars along Osborne Road.

Burglary

Lakeview- A home on Howard Street was burglarized on Sept. 16 between 1:30 and 4 p.m. The suspect gained entry into the home through an open front window. The loss was $10.

Theft

West Hempstead- A laptop computer was stolen from a 2004 Ford Explorer that was parked in front of 255 Winsdor Lane on either Sept. 19 or 20 between 10 and 4 p.m.

Suspicious fire

Lakeview- Police and fire officials are still investigating a fire that took place at Mid-Isle Collision on Lakeview Avenue on Sept. 21 at 12:03 a.m. The fire damaged nine vehicles on the property.
