Local Olympian charged with DWI

Lakeview resident Derrick Adkins, an Olympic gold medalist and Malverne High School graduate, was charged with DWI during an arraignment in Hempstead on Sept. 23, police said.

According to state police, Adkins, 39, was stopped by a state trooper on Aug. 29 at around 2 a.m. after the officer saw his Nissan sedan drifting in and out of lanes on the Meadowbrook Parkway. After the state trooper stopped him and smelled alcohol on his breath, police said, Adkins admitted that he had two glasses of red wine at a club nearby. A sobriety test later showed that Adkins had a blood-alcohol level of 0.15, nearly twice the legal limit, authorities said.

County officials said Adkins was released on his own recognizance after last Wednesday's arraignment. He is due back in court on Oct. 29.

Adkins became a local celebrity after he won a gold medal in the 400-meter hurdles in the Olympics in Atlanta in 1996. To honor his achievements and volunteerism in the community, county officials recently renamed Woodfield Road, between Eagle and Lakeview Avenues, Derrick Adkins Road. Adkins was also chosen as the Herald's 2008 Person of the Year.
