Malverne High School welcomed an exciting and culturally inspiring assembly Oct. 4 presented by the Nassau County Office of Hispanic Affairs where students were treated to song, dance and very special guests highlighting the significance of Hispanic Heritage Month.

The assembly started with presentations by representatives from Nassau County government, including Deputy Commissioner of Information Technology Mairen Medina-Torres and Runnie Myles of the Human Rights Commission. Each speaker shared experiences, insights and reflections on the significance of Hispanic Heritage within their respective fields and the broader community and offered the students information about internship and career opportunities within local government.

The assembly took an energetic turn as fashion designer, dance director and member of the Comite Civico Hispano De Arte y Cultura Guillermo Mendoza took the stage. He performed dances to two popular songs “La Pollera Colorá” and “Despacito.” Then, Ms. Universe Ecuador Delary Georgette Stoffers addressed the students for her keynote speech where she spoke of her activism and inspired them to follow a path to success.

Finally, Executive Director of the Nassau County Office of Hispanic Affairs Herb Flores closed out the assembly with a call to action for continuous learning and fostering a sense of community and mutual respect for Hispanic and other heritages.
