LIRR cancels 16 trains due to Amtrak derailment

Long Island Rail Road riders should expect cancelations and delays on some of Monday's evening rush-hour trains due to the derailment of an Amtrak train in Queens.

According to the MTA, the derailment is blocking one of the East River tunnels, forcing the LIRR to cancel 16 eastbound trains. The service reduction is necessary because the derailment of two cars of the Amtrak train in Sunnyside is limiting the LIRR’s access to the East River tunnels that lead to Penn Station. Trains still running on schedule will be more crowded than usual, the MTA warned.

Efforts by Amtrak to rerail the cars is ongoing with the assistance of LIRR personnel and equipment.
