A 35-year-old Lakeview woman allegedly tried to steal a Nassau County woman’s house by forging ownership documents.

Nassau County Fraud and Forgery detectives said 35-year-old Aurelia Soogea of Lakeview was charged with grand larceny after an investigation revealed she allegedly forged a 78-year-old woman’s signature on transfer of ownership documents with the Nassau County Clerk.

Police said the victim received a letter from the county clerk that paperwork to transfer ownership of her house had been received. The victim alerted the clerk’s office and saw that her signature had been forged on documents with her neighbor’s personal information, according to police.

After a lengthy and thorough investigation, police arrested Soogea for the Oct. 11, 2022 incident. Soogea was also charged with filing a false instrument.

Anyone who feels they may have been the victim of a similar incident should contact Nassau County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-8477 or call 911. All callers will remain anonymous.

SUBHED: Four years of unpaid taxes

A West Hempstead woman allegedly failed to pay taxes on yearly income of more than $400,000, according to Nassau County District Attorney Anne Donnelly.

Cynthia Ciaccio, 62, pleaded not guilty at her arraignment for allegedly failing to pay income taxes from 2017-20. Donnelly alleged Ciaccio accrued a total tax liability of $49,792 for a three-year period while making more than $400,000 a year.

Ciaccio was arraigned last week on charges of violating New York State tax laws, including two felonies. She was released on her own recognizance and ordered back in court April 19. Ciaccio faces up to seven years in prison if convicted of the top count.

“This defendant allegedly evaded her tax obligations for four years while collecting more than $400,000 in annual income and failed to submit income tax returns that honest taxpayers diligently and reliably file every year,” said Donnelly in a release. “No one is above this obligation, and individuals who deliberately evade paying their fair share of taxes will be prosecuted.”

In late 2019, the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance began a criminal investigation of Ciaccio as a potential Personal Income Tax evader. During the audit period, Ciaccio resided in Nassau County, according to Donnelly.
