Playoffs likely for West Hempstead

Coming into the 2011 season, West Hempstead boys’ soccer coach Chris Van Kovics was uncertain about how his team would perform. With little varsity experience and a shortage of offensive firepower, it was tough to get a feel for how the Rams would match up in Conference VI.

West Hempstead, which stands at 6-6-1 (6-4 in conference games) has exceeded expectations and appears to be on its way to the Class A playoffs. After a 2-0 shutout victory over Malverne/East Rockaway, the Rams occupy third place. Kareem Harris and Kevin Macario both found the back of the net and goalkeeper Luis Palomo has six saves to earn his fourth shutout.

Van Kovics believes the reason for the team’s success is obvious. “The boys are following the blueprint,” Van Kovics said. “It’s all about defense. If we mark our man and apply pressure, and challenge for every loose ball, we’re going to be in every game. Our defense has been real strong.” Junior Marco Flores, Armond St. Juste, and Nick Branker have been outstanding on defense.

After winning the conference opener, a 5-3 victory over Malverne/East Rockaway, West Hempstead pulled off a huge upset by blanking Great Neck North 1-0 on a penalty kick from Flores in the 66th minute. Palomo had eight saves for his first career shutout. Great Neck North hasn’t lost since.

The Rams continued to be the surprise of the conference by knocking off Floral Park 3-2. West Hempstead broke out to a 3-0 lead and held on a for a one-goal win. Ellison Pertuz, Rolando Martinez, and Luis Escobar each scored for West Hempstead.

After dropping a game to a strong Valley Stream South team, the Rams shutout Lynbrook, an opponent that always gives them fits. Harris banged home a rebound off a shot by Martinez in the first half for the game’s only goal.

West Hempstead pulled off another big win when Manhasset came to town. Alex E. Martinez put the Rams in front by heading in a pass off a corner kick from Harris to give West Hempstead the only goal it would need in a 3-0 victory. Escobar and Rolando Martinez added second half goals.
