Malverne Merchants and Professional Association recording secretary Nancy Friedman and West Hempstead Community Support Association President Rosalie Norton can now add Businessperson of the Year to their long list of achievements.

Both women were presented with the distinguished award by the Nassau Council of Chambers of Commerce, Inc. on Oct. 16 during its 25th annual Small Businessperson of the Year and Legislative Breakfast. The event, which was held at the Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury, was attended by dozens of chamber members, who gathered to recognize business owners and leaders in their communities.

The event was co-sponsored by the Herald Community Newspapers.

Since becoming an account executive for the Herald Community Newspapers in 1999, Friedman said she has worked to improve the business community in Malverne by serving as a MMPA board member. You can often spot Friedman helping the MMPA to get publicity for its events and activities in the Herald as well as helping the association prepare for its annual Garden Tour, Art Auction and Easter Egg Hunt. For the past two years, Friedman has also served as the co-chair of the Malverne Street Fair, which helps the association to raise money for the annual events and initiatives it sponsors within the village.

After spending time networking and building friendships with business owners in Malverne, Friedman said, her involvement with the MMPA flourished into an important part of her life.

"Working with the Malverne Merchants and Professional Association started off as a way for me to network, but helping the association quickly became something that I wanted to do all the time," she said. "I think the merchants in Malverne are the salt of the earth because they are a hardworking group of people who really care about the village they work in, and I really love working with them."

Friedman, a longtime Oceanside resident, is also the Herald's account executive for the Lynbrook and East Rockaway chambers of commerce.
