The Science Olympiad team at West Hempstead High School competed earlier this year in the 2010 Regional Science Olympiad — an academic interscholastic competition that follows the format of olympic games. West Hempstead was one of 62 schools competing in the Feb. 27 event.
The tournament, which offers challenges in biology, earth science, chemistry, physics, technology and others, is overseen by the National Science Olympiad, a nonprofit organization devoted to improving the quality of science education, increase interest in science and providing recognition for outstanding achievement in science education.
For West Hempstead High School's team, science teacher Darlene Mille was coach and worked with students to prepare for the Olympiad from the start of the school year.
Meanwhile, three West Hempstead High School students from Ms. Karen Perri's AP Chemistry class participated in the 2010 Chemistry Olympiad at Adelphi University on March 6.
The competition was sponsored by the American Chemical Society and included participants from 70 high schools.
The Chemistry Olympiad aims to foster growth in chemistry education by recognizing outstanding chemistry students and their teachers, as well as the importance of their school environment, and providing greater contact between the American Chemical Society and schools.
