WHHS looks to the past — but also the future

The West Hempstead Historical Society recently celebrated its past and future projects at the organization’s Fourth Annual Winter Luncheon at the Pompei Restaurant.

The organization’s displays about the History of Eagle Avenue/Marion Delaney School and the History of the Lakeview/West Hempstead Fire Departments at the West Hempstead Public Library were well-received by residents, increased membership and brought new additions to the archives.

The West Hempstead Fall Festival booth was full of historical information about the community, along with a replica of the Chestnut Street School Bell, which was constructed for young and old to ring in honor of the school’s 100th anniversary.

At every meeting this fall and winter, WHHS members also earned the pleasure of viewing their newly dedicated archived photo collection, which covers the walls of the library’s conference room.

In the second week of March, WHHS started its new projects with the installation of a display dedicated to the history of Lakeview Depot and Vicinity at the West Hempstead Public Library. This unique display will be the subject of the WHHS’s “Remembering Lakeview” show on Aug. 21st at 7 p.m. at the library. At the show, all 10 previous library displays will be available for viewing along with a documentary interview featuring three lifelong Lakeview residents.
