Rebecca, a 19-year-old who lives in Baldwin Harbor with her disabled parents and two siblings, has slept on the first floor of her Sandy-damaged home since the storm hit in 2012.
‘We were in panic mode’
When it’s time for 19-year-old Rebecca to go to sleep, she does so on a living room couch in her Baldwin Harbor home. Her 21-year-old brother and 16-year-old sister are a few feet away in the dining room, where they sleep on mattresses. The event is held to show appreciation for the unsung, and frequently unpaid, people who make our communities livable: law officers, firefighters, teachers and other community members who give unselfishly of themselves on a daily basis.
