The most stunning image I saw in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy was a YouTube video of a huge carp hanging from a pole in the parking lot of the Woodmere Middle School on Peninsula Boulevard.

In a quiet corner of the main gymnasium at Nassau Community College’s athletic center in Garden City, where basketball games and wrestling matches are normally held, Red Cross volunteers have fashioned a small, makeshift daycare center out of room dividers, pinning up newsprint where children can draw pictures in crayon. There are books for reading as well, but little else.

Part one in a series on how South Shore residents are coping in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy. This week we begin in Bellmore-Merrick. In subsequent weeks we plan to spotlight recovery efforts in other communities.
John Giammarino’s one-level house stood near the intersection of Bellmore Avenue and Clubhouse Road for 30 years. But only three years after the south Bellmore resident began renting the waterfront home, his landlord sent crews to rip out what was left of the walls.

The power was still out in many homes; the seawater was still in many homes. It was getting cold, and another storm was on the horizon. But even as Baldwin struggled against wave after wave of bad fortune, a second tide was rising. Community spirit — the spirit of neighbor helping neighbor — was helping Baldwin battle back.

Weary homeowners battered by Hurricane Sandy began to trickle into the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s mobile Disaster Recovery Center at Nassau Community College’s Student Union, a red-brick building on the west side of the campus, when it opened last Friday. The center was set up to help homeowners who suffered losses in the massive storm to file for grants that will enable them to rebuild.
