The financial challenges facing Baldwin schools in the next few years are imposing, to say the least. The budget proposal offered by the Board of Education is the best way to approach a situation fraught with pitfalls. We urge voters to approve it next Tuesday. more

The three candidates vying for a single open seat on the Baldwin school board at a PTA sponsored candidate forum May 4 were cordial, clever and well prepared. The forum, held at the district office on Hastings Street, was energetically moderated by Marion Fleming, a volunteer from a non-Baldwin chapter of the League of Women Voters, and was structured to include opening and closing statements from each candidate as well as questions from the audience. The questions, delivered on index cards to Fleming, were addressed to each candidate in turn, and the 40 or so community members who came up with them also heard remarks from Carl Williams, an unopposed candidate for library board. “No matter what the results of this election are, we’re lucky to have three such capable candidates for school board,” said one observer of the proceedings, and indeed the evening had a spirit of community rather than contention. more

With fiscal shortfalls threatening school programs county- and statewide, a half-dozen or so spectators clustered in a doorway for lack of seating on March 23 as the Baldwin School District Board of Education conducted its third and final public budget work session. more

No school welcomes the opportunity to put its emergency procedures to a real-life test, but the schools in north Baldwin executed their lockout plans to perfection last week while a police chase barreled through the area. more

The schools in the north of Baldwin were locked down briefly this afternoon as a precaution while police pursued suspects in the area. “The Brookside, Plaza, Lennox, Shubert, and Senior High Schools were locked down from approximately 12:45 until 2:00 this afternoon,” said District Spokesperson Cristina Schmohl. more

Budget meetings are rarely upbeat affairs, but the mood at the Baldwin Board of Education meeting Jan. 9 at the Plaza School was unusually somber. Despite the best efforts of a student orchestra that demonstrated the success of district music programs, the focus of the evening soon turned to crunching numbers. And the outlook was not rosy. more

Baldwin District schools will be opening on a delayed schedule today due to inclement weather and unsafe road conditions. The schools will be open today, but students are asked to arrive two hours after their customary time. Parents and caregivers were asked to "please bring your children to the bus stop exactly two hours later," a phone message from the district's Blackboard Connect system said at 5:30 this morning. This same message instructed school employees to make their way to work as soon as safety allowed and contained the information that an elementary band rehearsal had been called off. more

The Baldwin School Board's community input meeting, originally scheduled for 8 p.m. this evening has been postponed, Cristina Schmohl, the district's public information officer has informed the Herald. No rescheduling date has yet been announced for the meeting. more

The citizens of Baldwin appeared to be brushing off last night’s storm pretty effortlessly this morning despite accumulations of close to 10 inches in some areas as well as residual build up at street corners and bordering parking lots. more
