The Baldwin Board of Education made its pick for superintendent official on July 9, approving a three-year term for Dr. Shari Camhi in a 4-1 vote. Trustee Eric Harrison was the lone “no” vote after he unsuccessfully made a motion to table the resolution.

This budget vote has a much different feel than last May’s, when the school district’s spending plan exceeded the tax levy cap and failed to win the approval of a 60 percent supermajority of voters. After that vote failed, programs were cut in order for the district to get under the cap, but motivated community members raised $163,000 to keep many of those programs — like the high school musical and sports activities — intact.

As Board of Education candidates Karyn Reid, Heather Cameron and Lorienton Palmer took their seats in the district office gymnasium on April 30, silence fell over the room. The roughly 75 Baldwin residents in attendance had traveled through heavy rain to hear each candidate’s thoughts on key education issues and the time had arrived.
