Unbeknown to many, one of the pioneers of modern music makes his living on the South Shore. Anyone who has studied music at Hofstra University would recognize him, as he has been teaching at the school for 51 years. His name is Herbert Deutsch, and he lives in Massapequa Park with his wife, Nancy. In 1964, at age 32, he co-invented the Moog synthesizer, helping to pave the way for electronic music. more
Facing a $3 billion debt, Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano recently announced his intent to pursue a public-private partnership to operate and maintain the county’s three sewage treatment plants. At a news conference in Mineola on Thursday, Mangano, a Republican from Bethpage, said the transaction would earn the county $750 million, alleviating 25 percent of Nassau’s debt –– the highest of any county in New York. more
Nassau County Attorney John Ciampoli is alleging criminal misconduct by the nine members of the County Legislature’s Democratic caucus, and has asked District Attorney Kathleen Rice to look into the matter. It’s now winding down its 58th season, and it will begin the 2012-13 season, its 59th, in September. Third-graders at Old Mill Road Elementary School in North Merrick gathered at the front entrance of the school, eagerly awaiting the arrival of Olympic figure skating gold medalist Kristi Yamaguchi on Wednesday afternoon.
