Town of Hempstead Supervisor Donald Clavin, at lectern, and other town officials on Monday announced an initiative to help reimburse local school districts that have incurred unbudgeted expenses during the coronavirus pandemic. The $5.5 million, made possible by funding through the federal CARES Act, will provide $150,000 to each of the town’s 36 school districts and Nassau BOCES.

The Town of Hempstead incinerates its garbage at the Covanta waste-to-energy plant in Westbury. The ash is then sent to the Town of Brookhaven landfill in Suffolk County.
