Republican Chris Browne scored a stunning victory in the Conservative Party primary Sept. 15, knocking Nassau County Legislator Joe Scannell (D-Baldwin) off the party line by receiving 79 write-in votes, according to unofficial results provided by the county Board of Elections on Monday. more
Responding angrily to comments included in last week's Herald story, "Tax Revolt Party is over for Browne in the 5th," Republican and now Conservative candidate Chris Browne said his opponent, Legislator Joe Scannell (D-Baldwin), has "repeated and endorsed ... lies ... that accuse me of participation in criminal election fraud." Further angering Browne was a call from Scannell's attorney for Browne's arrest. more

With school back in session, many are concerned that another outbreak of the H1N1 virus, commonly known as swine flu, is just around the corner. An outbreak in the New York area in the spring spread fear about this new, unknown disease. Many parents kept their children home from school when cases were confirmed, leading to high absentee rates. Some schools closed entirely. more
