Madeline Singas, Nassau County’s new acting district attorney, stopped by Herald Community Newspapers’ Garden City office last Thursday for a discussion with editors and reporters about the views, goals and strategies she brings to the job. The conversation touched on topics from gun violence to illegal drugs, police practices, public corruption and what Singas sees as the need for “smart prosecution,” from crime-prevention strategies to alternatives to jailing young, non-violent offenders.

Since draconian New York State budget cuts forced the closing of Baldwin Council Against Drug Abuse’s treatment modality in 2011, the BCADA has been in full swing as a different kind of agency. BCADA now operates solely as a prevention modality, working hand-in-hand with the Baldwin School District.

Patients should stop thinking of powerful pain medications like Oxycontin and Vycodin as slightly stronger versions of Tylenol and Advil. Rather, they should think of them as “heroin pills.”
That’s according to Dr. Andrew Kolodny, president of Physicians for Responsible Opioid Prescribing and chief medical officer for Phoenix House, a national, nonprofit drug treatment agency.
