Black shopping bags overflowing with jeans and dresses filled the office of Theana Cheliotes, Mepham High School’s social worker for the past nine years, on a recent Thursday. Students were hurriedly preparing them to ship to Jamaica, Queens, for donation to the charitable organization 100 Suits for 100 Men. The nonprofit group normazlly collects business suits for men who cannot afford interview attire. A major roadblock that many low-income interviewees face is affording commonly accepted dress codes. more

Each year the Society for Science & The Public awards Research Report Badges to students entering the Intel Science Talent Search whose reports demonstrate a high degree of research and are exceptionally well written. The reports, Bellmore-Merrick Central District science teachers say, could have been produced by graduate, rather than high school, science students. Two Calhoun High School seniors –– Nicole Fegan and Paulina Fein –– recently received word that they have been awarded Research Report Badges for their papers submitted to the Intel contest last fall. more
The auditorium at Mepham High School in North Bellmore closely resembled a scene from an Indian film as four young dancers took the stage to perform a modern take on a classic form of Bollywood dance. Embellishing their ornate dresses were golden sequins, forming patterns across their bright pink tops. more
