Sparked by junior Brian Downey’s 10 third-quarter points and junior Kyle McGinley’s game-sealing free throws — he converted all six of his attempts in the final 46.9 seconds — Calhoun knocked off district-rival Kennedy, 65-53, last Friday night in a Conference AA-III boys’ basketball showdown.

Mepham not only captured the team championship at the annual Sprig Gardner Wrestling Tournament with 308 points — 60.5 more than runner-up Brooklyn Tech — in early December, that also featured district rivals Kennedy (third place, 211 points) and Calhoun (seventh, 122), the Pirates swept the individual awards.
