Gibson wasn’t the most athletic student at Mepham High School in Bellmore in the 1940s, so becoming popular at a school that placed a high value on success in sports –– in particular, in wrestling –– was no easy feat. Mepham donates 100 dresses –– and loads of kindness
Black shopping bags overflowing with jeans and dresses filled the office of Theana Cheliotes, Mepham High School’s social worker for the past nine years, on a recent Thursday. Students were hurriedly preparing them to ship to Jamaica, Queens, for donation to the charitable organization 100 Suits for 100 Men. The nonprofit group normazlly collects business suits for men who cannot afford interview attire. A major roadblock that many low-income interviewees face is affording commonly accepted dress codes. more

The auditorium at Mepham High School in North Bellmore closely resembled a scene from an Indian film as four young dancers took the stage to perform a modern take on a classic form of Bollywood dance. Erin Gilroy, who graduated from Mepham High School in Bellmore in December, half a year early, is now at the University of Tennessee, where she will play for the NCAA Divison I volunteers.

Mepham High School senior Erin Gilroy had completed all the science and math credits she needed to graduate by the end of 11th grade. Then she doubled up on English and social studies classes this fall. That enabled her to graduate from Mepham six months early — and get a big head start on her soccer training at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville. more
