EMFD swears in its new chief

New chief, officers following April 4 election

The East Meadow Fire Department recently held its annual election of officers on April 4. Walter Griffin was elected as the new Chief of Department, and he, along, with other elected officers, were swore in during a ceremony on April 6.

The new assistant chiefs were also sworn in, including Robert Salvesen Jr. as 1st Assistant Chief, James Kane as 2nd Assistant Chief and John McGee and 3rd Assistant Chief.

Other officers who were sworn in were Andrew Carlson as recording secretary, Keith Hoffman as corresponding secretary, Paul Schmaeling as treasurer and David Paganini as Sergeant at Arms.

With his election, Griffin, who replaced Chief John Priest, became the 45th chief in the department’s 83-year history.

The ceremony was led by Fire Commissioner Michael Finkelman.

“On this date, the department would say thank you to Chief of Department John J. Priest and welcome new Chief Walter P. Griffin to the highest of department ranks,” read a statement issued by the EMFD. “We would like to take this time to congratulate our 2012-2013 officers of the East Meadow Fire Department. All the very best for a safe and successful year.”
