His training, he said, has involved a lot of running and weightlifting, as he aims to improve his footwork, and brush up on his boxing technique. “I’m working my butt off right now with trying to get in shape,” Ferro said, adding that his experience playing baseball and softball, as well as high school swimming, has aided his conditioning.

His fundraising goal is $50,000, and as of late August, he was already more than halfway there. He is required to raise a certain amount that will go to the L.I. Fight for Charity, but anything beyond that, said Ferro, goes to a charity of his choice. He chose the Clark Gillies Foundation, an organization that helps children who are physically, mentally or financially challenged.

Ferro has three children, and said the reaction he’s received from them has been mixed. His 17- and 21-year-old sons, he said, are excited. Conversely, his 12-year-old daughter fears for his safety. His mother, on the hand was more forthright with her input: “I don’t want you boxing,” he said she told him.

Alure Home Improvement, headquartered in Plainview, has been in business since 1946, and its showroom has been in East Meadow since 1991. It is the largest remodeling company in the Tri-State area, according to Ferro.

And with the event just three months away, the Commack native said that he is ready to go. “Getting in the ring and doing this, it’s different,” Ferro said. “Here I am, with an opportunity to go out there and inspire others.”
