Firefighters open their doors to the public
EMFD held its annual open house last weekend

Firemen John Fitzpatrick, left, and John O’Brien showed youngsters the equipment they carry to rescue calls.

The East Meadow Fire Department welcomed the public to its open house held on one of the first chilly fall days this season to remind neighbors that they are the key to fire prevention.

A small group of families attended the event, held at Fire Headquarters on East Meadow Avenue, where children interacted with volunteer fire fighters. The men dressed in full gear to show the youngsters what they would see in an emergency and told them not to fear a rescuer who would be wearing a mask.

Families also picked up informational pamphlets on smoke detectors, winter safety and more.

The weather may have deterred some from leaving the warmth of their homes, but the children in attendance enjoyed meeting the men and women who protect their community every day.
